The Power of Craigslist

A few posts ago I talked about a couple of gumball vending machines I bought off of Ebay.  The machines produced more cash flow than I had imagined they would — almost $100 every month for an entire year.  Obviously, where the machines are placed has a huge impact on the amount of business they’ll do, but you can’t deny it’s the easiest money you’ll ever make.  Once a month for 15 minutes worth of “work”, I picked up enough to pay for a couple of really nice dinners, or the utility bill at home, or a cell phone bill, or the cable/internet bill.  It’s awesome.

So, here’s where Craigslist comes into play — the stores where I had the machines located closed down last month leaving me with no where to put my “investments”.  So, I decided to give someone else a chance to make some easy money and recoup my initial cost in the process.  I jumped on Craigslist.org and placed an ad for two gumball vending machines and the gumballs I had left over.  I put $375 per machine as the sales price (I paid just $150 per machine) and immediately started getting hits.  Long story short — both machines went for the asking price and I ended up making far more than I thought I would!!

Here was the investment breakdown:

  • $350 investment in two machines and 6 boxes of gumballs.
  • Average of $90 per month over 12 months = $1080
  • $750 for the sale of both machines = $400 profit

So I turned $350 into $1830 in just 12 months!! That’s over a 500% return in 12 months…

Don’t think you can’t do this!  You can!!!  What sort of whirlwind investments have you been a part of?
