Are you too broke to chase your dream?

There is a friend of mine who had a very simple idea for a game that would bring people together.  It’s not mechanical, it’s not electrical, it has one very simple moving part, and it is probably the next break-thru “thing” that everyone will want to give as a gift.  It’s called Q and you can get it here.

Here is the purpose and point of this post (alliteration rules!): Q would never have been “born” if my friend hadn’t given up the all-important lifestyle that so many of us strive for in exchange for the chance of a lifetime.  He and his high-powered, career driven wife both had phenomenal jobs with pharmaceutical companies.  Both enjoyed the little luxuries that those career choices afford.  And then one day they did what few people will do — they downsized.

*GASP* “Say it ain’t so, Paw!”

It is so.  And it is SO necessary for most people to do to realize what they truly want in life.  I hear people talk about their dreams and what they know they are meant for, yet when questioned why they haven’t taken that path in life, usually the reasons are purely monetary.  “I couldn’t afford to do that.”  “We don’t have the start-up capital.”  “I just bought this new house, car, furniture, pet, fill in the blank.”

GIVE ME A BIG FAT BREAK.  The next person that tells me they can’t travel to Europe for a month because they just bought a couch, I’m going to make them watch William Shatner movies until their eyes bleed.  One seventeen year-old I met a few months ago told me he probably wouldn’t be able to go to college because he had to make his $250 car payment on his brand new Honda Civic.  Did I mention it’s for the next SEVEN YEARS??!!  What parent in their right mind says, “Yeah son, go buy a depreciating asset and trade your life for it.  That sounds awesome!”

You know what I want for you?  BLISS.  Pure, unadulterated bliss.  Happiness from stem to stern, top to bottom, head to toe, and ear to ear for that matter.  And if you’re going to follow Joseph Campbell’s advice “Follow Your Bliss” from a dream perspective — whether that be starting a business, writing a book, traveling overseas, or jumping from airplanes — DO NOT let your lifestyle interfere with that.  Change what you do, how you spend, how you live, where you live, what you eat, what you drive, what you wear.  Get uncomfortable so that you can be free.  I’m talking financial freedom where no one owns you and you do what you like when you like.

Sound good?  It is.

What would you do if you had financial freedom? (If even for a day, week, or month?)
